Crude oil is responsible for more than just automobile gasoline.America has a long history with the automobile. And along with this its supporting industries. Now that the environmental impact is widely known and the oil reserves are decreasing we are struggling with the notion of replacing gasoline as the fueling agent for our automobiles. But to know the full impact one needs to take a look at what else a barrel of crude produces.
Here is a list of items that most people, not in the industry, do not realize comes from the refinement of crude oil:
· Plastics
· Carbon black (coloring and reinforcement agent for tires)
· Road paving
· Curing agents (for concrete)
· Other elastomers (some used in clothing)
· Pesticides
· Perfumes
· Food preservatives
· Heat transfer fluids (antifreeze)
· Organic syntheses
· LED’s
· Dyes
· Wood preservatives
· Waxes
· Heating oils
· Lubricants
· Water proofing
· Roofing materials
This is a short list of byproducts, there are many others. You can see the impact on our society as a whole, if we abruptly stopped using crude oil, would be tremendous. Our dependence on gasoline runs deeper than just running our automobiles, planes, trains, trucks and buses.
